Official announcement: C.D Leganés’ legend Bejamín Moreno has passed away

C.D Leganés regrets to announce that the club’s historic football player has passed away. He was 65 years old. Moreno played for the club for five seasons between 1980 and 1985, He scored 52 goals on 168 matches.

Benjamín was born in Jaén and moved to Madrid with his family on an early age. He started playing football at Real Madrid where he managed to reach “juvenil” category in which he learned his famous play “la Morena” with his teammates: a resource to pass up rivals used by Touriño, an Argentinean first team player.

Moreno arrived to Leganés after playing at Murcia and Valdepeñas. Juan Belmonte, a Leganés’ management member recommended the player to Jesús Polo. The pepineros were playing on third division, a category with difficult playing facilities by the time. Luis Rodríguez de Miguel pitch would become the place that He called home for five seasons with teammates such as Osa, Aguilera o Trobbiani.

He scored the first goal of Trofeo Villa de Leganés tournament on 1980. The team faced Getafe on that occasion and Rayo Vallecano was the one to win it after defeating Torrejón. Three years later Leganés had the opportunity to win against Real Madrid Castilla, a team that had players such as Pardeza, Martín Vázquez, Míchel and Butragueño on their squad. Moreno scored the last goal of that day (3-1).

Known for his moustache, he was an important forward for all the fans that supported the team every weekend. He was the team’s top socrer on his first two years at the club with 16 and 22 goals, respectively. He left the team after 168 matches and 52 goals scored which allow him to be one of the club’s historic top scorers. Moreno continued playing for Móstoles, Fuenlabrada and Sonseca until the day he retired.

After retiring from his work at Metro de Madrid, Leganés payed tribute to him on the 2015/16 team kit presentation which had a similar model to the uniforms that Moreno wore as a pepinero.
